Patagonia Fun Birding Workshop

On Sunday 11th April, Ed, Susan, Sheryl, Mike and I spent the day in Patagonia for April’s Fun Birding Workshop.

Paton’s:
Many thanks to Michael Marsden and Donna Knox for caring for the birds and birders. Two DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHERS, a WARBLING VIREO and a female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK were my FOS. A stunning adult male BULLOCK’S ORIOLE was joined by three HOODED ORIOLES (ad male, 1st-summer male, female). A pair of displaying COOPER’S HAWKS finally tempted a pair of GRAY HAWKS to show themselves, whilst others were calling either side of the property. Hummingbirds included loads of BROAD-BILLED, a couple of ANNA’S, decent numbers of BLACK-CHINNED, a bright male RUFOUS and at least three VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRDS.

Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve:
PAINTED REDSTART, a few WILSON’S WARBLERS, DUSKY-CAPPED, HAMMOND’S, DUSKY and VERMILION FLYCATCHERS, GRAY HAWK. The hummingbird feeders were lively, with BROAD-BILLED, ANNA’S, BLACK-CHINNED and a brief VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD.

Patagonia Roadside Rest:
A pair of GRAY HAWKS displaying over the road, the male diving dramatically. A ZONE-TAILED HAWK and a couple of BLACK VULTURES overhead.
