Mt. Lemmon: May Workshop

It was quality over quantity for our May Fun Birding Workshop. Despite being cold and windy at times with large bird-free zones, it proved to be a good day for raptors in the Santa Catalina Mountains.

We started with a ZONE-TAILED HAWK over Tanque Verde x Pantano in Tucson, with another over the Babad Do’ag viewpoint on Catalina Highway. Moving up to Rose Canyon Lake, an adult COMMON BLACK HAWK was circling overhead. Nice! Next up was a male NORTHERN GOSHAWK which flashed through the pines near the entrance kiosk and perched up for prolonged views. Very nice! Also in this area a female OLIVE WARBLER, three RED CROSSBILLS including a bright red male, a pair of PAINTED REDSTARTS, GRACE’S WARBLER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, PYGMY NUTHATCH, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, HERMIT THRUSH and AMERICAN ROBIN.

A RED-FACED WARBLER was at Marshall Gulch, BAND-TAILED PIGEON and HOUSE WREN at Summerhaven and BROAD-TAILED and MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at the Iron Door Restaurant, Ski Valley.

The mountains look especially gorgeous at the moment.
